John Hess, 83, passed away at his home Friday, March 30, 2012.
John was born September 8, 1928, in Des Moines, to Otto and Mary Jane (Robinson) Hess. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. John was a roofer until his retirement in 1982, and served as past president of Roofing Union Local 142. He loved watching wrestling, playing Yahtzee, going to Prairie Meadows and taking his son to watch trains.
John is survived by his daughters, Linda (Bruce) Cornwell and Phyllis Coakley; son, David Conn, Jr.; brother, Robert “Bobby” Hess; grandchildren, Nichole Wilson, Michael Wood, Brian Pete and Misty (Eric) Davidson; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; daughter, Mary; sisters, Betty Esther, Maxine, Marge and Gerri Mae; and brothers, LaVerne and Delbert.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with a funeral service at 1 p.m. John will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Margaret at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family. My husband Keith Lincoln always talked of John. and had fond memories of him. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him. as is my husband who passed this last June.

I met John when we worked at Super Toad and would still run into him every now and then, he always had time to visit and always had a smile on his face. He will truly be missed. I am glad that I had the chance to meet him. My thoughts and prayers are to his family and friends. RIP John.
