Charles “Bill” Backstrom passed away on March 27, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Bill was born on November 12, 1929, in Des Moines, to William and Lucille Backstrom.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948, and went on to serve his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Bill worked for Meredith, sold real estate for Darwin Smith Reality and served as a travel agent at Travel Center. He loved the south side and was well known in the community as a “father to many, who never knew a stranger.” Bill enjoyed spending time with family and friends, attending Lincoln sports and traveling with his wife Mary. He was a member of the Bellizzi MacRae American Legion Post #659, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Lincoln Alumni Club and helped establish the Lincoln Foundation.

Charles is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Cheryl Moureau, Karen Steward, Steven Backstrom; grandchildren, Jeremy(Amanda) Steward, Jason (Kaci) Steward, Jordan Steward; great-granddaughter, Harper Steward; and brother, Reed (Donna) Backstrom.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Sharon Kay Backstrom, Linda Backstrom and sister, Lillian Hull.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with burial following at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with a Vigil Service starting at 6:30 p.m.
