Roland O. Hoffman, 75, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He was born March 20, 1936, in Des Moines, to Oren and Lola Hoffman.
Rollie dedicated 42 years to law enforcement with the Des Moines Police Department, as a DCI Agent, and as Director of Security with Dubuque and Clinton Gaming. He enjoyed bus driving for the Southeast Polk School district and judging harness racing. He was also a member of the Air Force for four years.
Rollie is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Cindy (Randy) Westphal, Brad (Delia) Hoffman, Kim Amandus, and Melissa Hoffman; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.
A memorial visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines.

I am sorry to hear of Rollie's passing. We missed it in the paper or we would have been to his services. Rollie and I grew up together through high school. It only leaves Pete Bradford (Oklahoma) and I remaining of the group that were close in the neighborhood. Our best wishes and condolences to Linda and the family.

To the family and friends of Rollie,
I joined DCI in 1979 and met Rollie early in my career. He gained my respect immediately. Although I was assigned to another part of the state, what contact I did have with him was all very positive and enjoyable. He always was positive and supportive of new agents. I am honored to have known and worked with him. My sincere sympathies are with you in his passing.

Dear Family and Friends:
I began my employment as a general law enforcement instructor at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on July 2, 1982 a day after I resigned as a detective with the Cedar Falls Police Department (9 years there as officer and investigator).
During my first year learning the ropes and on the range, I met and was mentored by Rollie, Forry Davenport and Jim Barr. What a trio, huh? These three were the "old school" officers and later BCI and then DCI agents before Tom Ruckslow left Cedar Falls (I was one of 7 hired to replace Rux and 6 other officers that left).
When you are mentored by the likes of professionals like this, even two young pups like Arlen Ciechanowski and myself can benefit . . . (Standing joke-I'm a retired Assistant/Acting Director from the Academy and the Academy is now in the able and capable hands of one Arlen Joseph Ciechanowski)
Everyone once in awhile if not in several blue moons, special people mentor "newbies" that apparently show future promise. I loved Rollie as an uncle just like I love old John Stark, the ledgendary Sheriff of Story County and old Jerry Allen, Sheriff of Cerro Gordo County and later a DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement Director not to mention my father-in-law, Jack Callaghan.
Everytime we lose an ICON like Rollie or one of those I have mentioned, a piece of what we are goes with them. To say he will be missed is a huge understatement.

Rollie was an agent with DCI when I was a brand new rookie officer in 1979. I don"t remember too many of the agents from those days, but I certainly remember Rollie for his upbeat optimism and obvious love for the job he was doing. He portrayed an attitude that showed the advantages of making a career with DPS and to be proud to stay in the department until full retirement. We were truly an organization that was a team across the Divisions as far as the line Troopers and Agents were concerned, less so among the command staffs of those divisions at the time. Today the opposite is more likely to be true, though the reasons are probably numbered by the score, and daring to proclaim a major culprit would be foolhardy at the least. I have a feeling Rollie would just smile and say, "There is more to this story than is immediately apparent. Don't jump to conclusions but let the facts direct your investigation."

I am so sorry for your loss. Rollie was a great guy and I raally enjoyed all of our get-togethers when we all were at BC/BS in the good, old days.
He was so talented, fun, and just a good guy.
Sorry I can't come to the memorial, since I have been under the weather a bit lately, but on the mend. Would have preferred to tell you this in person.
