Leo Nichols

Leo J. Nichols, 82, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital from heart failure. He was born March 23, 1929, to William and Carrie Nichols, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and moved to Des Moines in 1953.

Leo retired in 1993 from the Des Moines Register after 40 years of service in the mailroom. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, taking care of “The Boys” (Brandon, Billy and Bobby), and napping. He also enjoyed relaxing and watching the squirrels and birds.

Leo is survived by daughter, Barbara Jean Curtis of Little Rock, AR; sons, Ronnie (Cyndee) Nichols and Bobby (Valerie) Nichols; daughters, Rebecca Adams and Donna (Sean) Fitzgerald, all of Des Moines; grandchildren Kim Zimmerman, Jimmy (Carrie) Hamilton, Tawnya Rowland, Carrie Nichols, Kirby Fetters, Julie Nichols, Brandon Leo Fitzgerald, Billy Fitzgerald, and Bobby Fitzgerald; great-grandchildren, Carissa Rowland, Vanessa Rowland, Zachary Hamilton and Bradley Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; three brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday March 20, 2012, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
