Service Details

Linda Lea Lamb, 60, was born July 20, 1951, in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Garrison Lamb and Coralea (Olmsted) Lamb. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and friends, on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

She had a variety of job interests. Some of the positions she held utilized her artistic skill, others her technical ability. The job she enjoyed the most was as an accountant for the law firm of Brannon, Brown, Haley, Robinson & Bullock, P.A. during the many years she lived in Florida.

Linda’s career as a Red Cross National Responder volunteer began after her diagnosis. She wanted to help others with the time she had left in her life. Hurricane Katrina was her first assignment followed by deployments to 12 disasters. These included hurricanes, tornados, floods and wildfires. Her expertise included computer operations, logistics, mass care and damage assessment. The 20 training courses she attended made her versatile for a variety of assignments, depending on the nature of the disaster. She particularity enjoyed setting up computer systems beamed to satellites in locations where there was virtually no electricity.

Those left to cherish Linda’s memory are her daughter, Julie (Dusty) Redeker and their children, Tyler and Ashley Pettigrew and Landri Paige Redeker, all of Kansas; her sister, Sharon (Ronald) Dahleen of Johnston; her brother, Rod (Mary) Lamb and their children, Melissa Lamb and Zach Peterson, all of Johnston; other relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Harker and her parents. She will be especially missed by Lola Grace and Mimi Rose, her Maltese companions who provided constant and unfailing comfort during her many health challenges.

Linda and her family want to extend thanks to the Oncology Department at the University of Iowa Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Mohammed Milhem, for his talent, research and never ending search for a cure. He was not only her doctor for many years but her friend. Without his support she would not have lived to see many of the wonderful events that occurred in her family during the last few years. She met some special friends on the staff including Lea Weldon, Amy Conklin, Melanie Frees and Wendy Beranek.

Special thanks also go to the Mercy Home Heath Care team of skilled nurses who always made time to treat her as a person, not just a patient, and to the caring, attentive staff at Mercy Hospice Johnston who made the end of her life comfortable and peaceful.

Per Lin’s wishes, a private celebration has already taken place with burial at Vandalia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice Johnston, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston 50131, or to the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue- No Kill Shelter, PO BOX 38, Boone, IA 50036, in loving memory of Linda Lamb.
