Ronald Orval Thoren passed away February 10, 2012, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Ron was born March 15, 1939, to Orval and Violet Thoren. He attended school in Des Moines and lived his entire life there, retiring from work with the State of Iowa in 1981.

Ron loved taking walks and spending time with his many cherished nieces and nephews, listening to music, going on vacations, talking about history, and watching movies. His favorite movies were Nicholas & Alexandra, Camelot, Scrooge, Swing Kids, and just about any scary movie. Ron also loved art and going to museums. He was especially interested in all things Egyptian and Russian.

Ron was preceded in death by his father, Orval, and by his nephew, John Brouillet. He is survived by his mother, Violet Thoren, his sister, Jeanne McWilliams; and his brother, Michael (Rhonda) Brouillet. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, Jerry (Nova) McWilliams, Steve McWilliams, Scott (Lora) McWilliams, Jodie McWilliams, Julie Brouillet, Michael Brouillet, Jr., Michelle (Randy) Hoy and Steve (Kristy) Brouillet. Ron also had seventeen great-nieces and nephews and nine great-great-nieces and nephews, as well as many other extended family members.

Ron touched the lives of everyone around him with his warm smile, his kind heart and his generous spirit. His family was especially blessed to know and to love this gentle, caring and amazing man.

A visitation will he held on Sunday, February 12, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Friends and family are also invited to attend a memorial service in celebration of Ron’s life beginning at 9 a.m., on Monday, February 13, 2012, at the same location.
