February 04, 2012
Beverly Jean (Schuessler) Horton passed away February 4, 2012, at Bright Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW in Altoona, with burial at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2012, also at the church.
Bev was born February 1, 1937, the daughter of Gladys and Howard Schuessler of Camp Dodge, and she was a graduate of Johnston High School. She and husband, Michael, moved to Altoona in 1963 and have lived there ever since.
Bev, whose friends called her “Duck” or “Martha”, was an active member of the Altoona community. She was involved in local political campaigns and referendums, was on the Campus board of directors, and was a charter member of the Terrace Hills Golf Course Ladies Club. For her countless community efforts, she was awarded Iowa Volunteer of the Year by Governor Vilsack and Citizen of the Year by the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce.
She was an avid golfer and sports fan. She and her husband, Michael, competed together in husband and wife golf tournaments and enjoyed much success together. Bev was also club champion at Terrace Hills. Bev and Mike were tireless Southeast Polk fans as well. They were awarded the “Super Fan” Award, and Bev was a long-time leader of the Southeast Polk Athletic Booster Club. In 2010, Bev and Mike were inducted into the Southeast Polk Hall of Fame, an honor she cherished.
Bev enjoyed nearly 40 years of employment as a legal secretary at the Skinner Law Firm. She was a dedicated worker who made many friends through her work and thought of many of her coworkers as family.
She was also a proud and loyal member of a recovery program, and she enjoyed 30+ years of sobriety.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Vernon, Bobby, Elwood, and David, and her sister, Barbara.
Survivors include her husband, Michael, daughter, Marty Mark (Steve), sons, William (Melissa) and Joseph (Stacie), and her brother Jimmie Schuessler (Janet). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Gina, Sara, Alex, Kennedy, Elijah, Davis, Cole, and Jackson.

Joe, Stacie and Family,
So sorry for your loss! Bev was a wonderful mentor to members of our family and was so instrumental in helping form a support group at SEP way back in 1984. Her devotion to that group helped many students that struggled with different things. She was a blessing to all of those around her. I was unable to attend services, but will always remember Bev as such a beautiful and wonderful soul, and will cherish the memories she leaves behind. I will keep you all in my thoguhts and prayers and pray that your pain and loss lessen every day. May the love of Jesus Christ surround you during your difficult time.
Thinking of you,
Shelli Flanagan Bridges

Our hearts and prayers are with the family and here is a poem which may help you in these difficult days.
Its okay to be afraid.
Youre going through a
very difficult time,
and no one expects you
to be strong or act
like nothing has happened.
So dont worry if youre scared.
Just remember it takes
more courage to let one tear fall
than to keep a thousand
inside you.

Dear Uncle Mike and family,
I am so saddened for your loss. I hope she did not suffer too much with her cancer and that you all got to spend precious time with her at the end.
I have such precious memories growing up with you guys. She was always my favorite Auntie Bev. (Sorry Auntie Barb) I am alot like her.....and I am very proud of that cause her heart was golden.
I'm sorry I could not come and see her at the end or come to her service. I would dearly love to be there. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.
Love to you all,
Debbie
