Beverly Jean (Schuessler) Horton passed away February 4, 2012, at Bright Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW in Altoona, with burial at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2012, also at the church.

Bev was born February 1, 1937, the daughter of Gladys and Howard Schuessler of Camp Dodge, and she was a graduate of Johnston High School. She and husband, Michael, moved to Altoona in 1963 and have lived there ever since.

Bev, whose friends called her “Duck” or “Martha”, was an active member of the Altoona community. She was involved in local political campaigns and referendums, was on the Campus board of directors, and was a charter member of the Terrace Hills Golf Course Ladies Club. For her countless community efforts, she was awarded Iowa Volunteer of the Year by Governor Vilsack and Citizen of the Year by the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce.

She was an avid golfer and sports fan. She and her husband, Michael, competed together in husband and wife golf tournaments and enjoyed much success together. Bev was also club champion at Terrace Hills. Bev and Mike were tireless Southeast Polk fans as well. They were awarded the “Super Fan” Award, and Bev was a long-time leader of the Southeast Polk Athletic Booster Club. In 2010, Bev and Mike were inducted into the Southeast Polk Hall of Fame, an honor she cherished.

Bev enjoyed nearly 40 years of employment as a legal secretary at the Skinner Law Firm. She was a dedicated worker who made many friends through her work and thought of many of her coworkers as family.

She was also a proud and loyal member of a recovery program, and she enjoyed 30+ years of sobriety.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Vernon, Bobby, Elwood, and David, and her sister, Barbara.

Survivors include her husband, Michael, daughter, Marty Mark (Steve), sons, William (Melissa) and Joseph (Stacie), and her brother Jimmie Schuessler (Janet). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Gina, Sara, Alex, Kennedy, Elijah, Davis, Cole, and Jackson.
