Donald "Jim" Thomas
January 28, 2012
Donald (Jim) Thomas, Jr., Ankeny, Iowa, ended his journey on Earth on January 28, 2012. After a lifetime of work as a policeman, six years in Windsor Heights and 22 years in Ankeny, he became a wonderful house dad for the last few years of his life, taking care of Andrew, 14, and Katelyn, 9. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working on cars, motorcycles, ATVs, swimming, and making noodles. Jim and his wife Shelly were able to celebrate eighteen years of married blissfulness.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Shelly, sons Christopher, Brian, Andrew, and daughter, Katelyn, sisters, Catherine (Gary) Turner, Charlotte (John) Massey, and brother-in-law, Gary Hodges, many other family members and treasured friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Donald Thomas, Sr., and his twin sister, Candy Hodges.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s memory to his family for their future.

I can't say enough how much I enjoyed Jims' company and his sense of humor. I will never forget the V8 VW. My prayers for his family. Be proud of Jim. My take is he stepped up, he never stepped aside. Jim was an ethical Officer, whether someone was looking or not. Ride well on the next part of your journey.

I am a long time friend of Gary & Kathy Turner and am so sorry to hear that Jim passed. Although I had not met all of Kathy's family, I feel like I do know you. She is so proud of her family and talked often about each one of you with much love in her heart. Such a tragic accident and I pray that the family can find comfort in each other as you gather together to say good bye to Jim on Saturday.

I was so saddened to hear the news about Jim's passing. Jim and I worked together at APD. I recall his easy smile and dry sense of humor. Jim was straightfoward and forthright in everything he did. He seemed to enjoy life and his friendship with everyone. He very much cared about the community and the welfare of others. He was so genuine - a rare commodity today. Joyce and I will keep your family in our prayers.

I will forever remember Jim's sense of humor and how one little snide remark from him could turn your whole day around and make you laugh. What a gift he had for making others feel happy. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Jim at the Ankeny Police Department and a little light left the Department when Jim did. My prayers go out to Jim's family.

My heartfelt sympathies go to Jim's entire family. While working with him at Ankeny PD, I enjoyed his humor, stories and downright orneriness. He'll be remembered with fondness that will always put a smile on my face. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
