George Robert Helmers

George Robert Helmers, 53, passed away January 27, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

George was born March 7, 1958, in Algona, Iowa. He worked as carpenter and was a member of Moose Lodge #2589. George loved playing cards, especially cribbage, with family and friends. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid sports fan. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and was a Philadephia Phillies and Nascar fan.

George is survived by his mother, Ellavene Helmers; sons, Matt (Sunny) Helmers and Nick (Angelia White) Helmers; significant other, Pat “Trish” Henderson and her daughter, Jennifer (Dino) Henderson; granddaughter, Lexi Olson; step-grandchildren, Lexi, Hunter and Taelor Derrickson; brothers, Dan Helmers and Dean (Lil) Helmers; sisters, Kay Eckhardt, Pam (John) Evans and Judy (Brian) Sinkler; brother-in-law. Don Kern; and a host of other extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Helmers; brother, Denny Helmers; and his sister, Marcia Kern.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, January 30, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Following the visitation, family and friends are invited to the Moose Lodge, 2515 Wedgewood Road, Des Moines, Iowa, to celebrate George’s life.
