Troy L. Armel
January 25, 2012
Troy Lee Armel, 44, of Des Moines’s South Side, ended his journey on Earth on January 25, 2012 at Taylor House Hospice after a heroic battle with cancer.
After a lifetime of work outside the home, he became a wonderful housedad for the last few years of his life, taking care of his young daughter Montana. In his own words, “This is THE most fulfilling job I could ever imagine.” He enjoyed visiting the family lake home in Missouri, fishing, baseball, music, barbecues, picnics, sledding, all with family, and coloring with his daughter. Troy had many significant accomplishments in his lifetime, but none he would rather us focus on than his daughter. Troy met his wife Kendra while living in Phoenix, Arizona in 2000, and was able to celebrate their 10 year anniversary with her in the hospital on January 22,2012.
Troy was ever so grateful to all of the wonderful people who had helped him, including University of Iowa Hospital, American Cancer Society, Hope Lodge, Methodist Hospital, Taylor House Hospice, Lutheran Hospital Powell Center and his church family, as well as Alcoholics Anonymous.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife Kendra (Silvey) Armel, daughter Montana Sandra Jeannette Armel, his chosen son Tony Hartsock, daughter in law Kaela Hartsock, and granddaughters Decii & Sayer Hartsock, mother Jeanne (Whelchel) Wheeler, mother in law Sandra Silvey, grandmother Jeannette Whelchel, sister in law Amber Silvey-Hukill, brother in law Roger Hukill, nephew Rowan Silvey-Hukill, niece Zoiee Silvey-Hukill, brother in law Erik Silvey, sister in law Nicole Silvey, niece Kaylee Silvey, niece Iris Silvey, nephew Landon Silvey, aunt Judy (Gary) Stuva, aunt Sheryl Knox, aunt Shelly (Gene) Clingenpeel, aunt Cheri Shannon, aunt Denise (Jeff) Armel, many cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by: father Danny Armel, father in law William Silvey, grandfather Kenneth Whelchel, grandfather Fred Armel, grandmother Betty Armel and cousin Jason Murray Wood.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Indianola Heights Christian Church, 3139 SE 8th Street. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Graveside ceremony will follow at Webb Cemetery, Spring Hill, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Troy’s memory to his young daughter Montana, for her future: In Memory of Troy Armel, Bankers Trust, 655 East Army Post Road, Des Moines, IA 50315.

As a long-distance friend, witnessing the love and courage both Troy and Kendra displayed during these past several months, I am humbled, and honored to have been blessed by knowing him. May he forever live on in each of our memories, and be a symbol of courage and dignity. He will be truly missed, but not nearly as much as he is truly loved.

We are so incredibly sorry to hear of your loss. Montana is a lucky girl to have the devotion of her dad, mom, & grandma. Please know that Montana and your family has been in our thoughts, and will continue to be. I remember last year, Montana was over to our house to play & was looking forward to sledding with her dad the next day.
