Dear Mrs. Priest and family,
I joined the Des Moines Schools near the end of Dan's career. He was admired, respected and loved by everyone. It was people like Dan that made me want to stay with the Des Moines Schools. He was a nice role model to all.
My sympathies at your loss.

Dear Charlotte,
Since Conni and I moved from Des Moines several years ago we have had limited contact with many old friends. In spite of this, I have frequently thought of the wonderful hospitality you and Dan shared with many of us on many occasions.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you in you time of loss. Knowing you and Dan was a real blessing for me.
Your friend,

I remember Mr. Priest as my Principal, many years ago, at Barlow Granger elementary school in Des Moines. As a young child, he conveyed a towering image that no one should reckon with. However, I was lucky enough to know him as a gentle and caring person. I have never forgotten that and always remember him with great respect. In our conversations with each other, we realized that we had a common bond from Southwest Iowa. My Grandmother, Madge Jordan, was raised outside of Arispe and the Priest family knew the Aikin family. I still remember visiting with Mr. Priest about the Old Settlers picnics. My heartfelt sympathy to your family. He was a wonderful man.

Charlotte, Duane, and family,
Our sympathy to all of you. When I was in kindergarten in Redfield I remember frequently stopping at your house and playing with Larry on my way home from school. And I remember my first airplane ride with Dan flying the plane. Dan, a kind and good man, reminded so much of my grandpa John Priest.
Mary the Lord show His kindness and hope to all of you.

Dear Charlotte and family, Was so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We have been down here in Texas for almost 23 years but I will always have special memories of union meeting in your home. Dan always had such kind and friendly interest in everyone. And I always remember the special bond he and my dad had, the airplane rides and all. Will be thinking of you and your family today. Know God will give you comfort and peace knowing Dan has gone on to the reward he's lived for.

I had the privilege of meeting Dan and Charlotte through Duane back in the late '70s as we worked to develop he land across the road from them. I always thoroughly enjoyed all my visits with both. Dan was a delightful person to work with and to talk with.
When I made the decision to leave Des Moines to become an Air Traffic Controller, Dan was the man who called me and said "Before you leave, let's go flying!" And, so we did. An afternoon I will remember for the rest of my life.
Many years later Dan and I talked about my family purchasing a piece of land and building. I would have loved being out in the country, but there was no way my wife was on board with that! However, I remember that visit vividly. Sitting around the kitchen table with my wife and children, talking and laughing was memorable and so much Dan!
I never had the opportunity to meet Larry, but based upon all the stories Dan told over many, many years, I always felt I knew him. Dan ALWAYS talked about his boys--both as high school students at SEP and as adults. Dan loved his family and that was very obvious!
What I remember most about Dan is his level of integrity was beyond reproach. In a dark world, Dan Priest truly was a beacon of hope.
Duane, I am sorry I will not be able to attend either the visitation or the funeral. I now live in Waterloo and serve as a Funeral Director (ironic, huh?) for Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories. I am scheduled to be out of state this weekend. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and my prayers. Your dad always made me feel like part of the family and I will treasure him forever!
God Bless!!

Our memories of Dan began in 1978 when he befriended Melanie as a kindergartener and her little sister Mollie. We were always eager to see him in subsequent years and have missed him since leaving IA in 2003. Our sympathy to you, Charlotte, and the rest of the family. We cherished his friendship.
