Marlys J. Jacobson, 86, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, 10th and Pleasant Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
Marlys was born to Lewis and Lydia Kratz on a farm near Bradford, Iowa, on September 21, 1925. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. She married Walter Jacobson in 1947 and began her teaching career. She later received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Drake University in Des Moines. She taught a total of 33 years at McCallsburg, Milford Township in Nevada, and Des Moines and Saydel Schools. She was a member of Iowa and National Education Associations, Saydel Retired Teachers, Des Moines Retired School Personnel Association, Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority, the PEO JZ Chapter, Friendship Force of Des Moines, and several square dance clubs. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, serving along the way in various capacities in work groups and Christian education as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and a caller on shut-ins. She loved learning all of her life, and in retirement especially enjoyed attending Elderhostels. She loved crossword puzzles, and shopping.
She is survived by her daughter, Jill; one sister, Jan Corbin; one sister-in-law, Alma Jacobson; many nieces and nephews; other loving relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, and her daughter, Kathy.

Hi Jill,
Wish I could be there to celebrate your Mom's life with you. As my Godmother, Aunt Marlys greatly influenced my young life, and as an adult offerd me her continued love and support.
I miss you Marlys. When you see Walter and Kathy in Heaven, give them a hug for me.

Dear Jill,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Marlys was such a fine, kind person. I met her and your Dad shortly after I became a member of First UMC in the early 1970s. I hope you have many fond memories of her.
