Vernon Deaton

Vernon Deaton, 78, died Friday, January 20, 2012, at Valley View Village, where he had spent the past three years among the compassionate caregivers of Valley View.

He was born September 18, 1933, to Hazel and William Deaton, in Bondurant, Iowa.

Vernon proudly served in the Iowa National Guard and the Polk County Sheriff Office Reserves. He worked for many years as a bus driver for the Des Moines Public School System. After retirement he had several different jobs including bus associate and courier services.

Vernon had a passion for camping with his wife and friends traveling Iowa and surrounding states. He also enjoyed playing cards, collecting John Deere memorabilia, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes!

Left to cherish Vernon’s memory includes his wife of 57 years, Joan; grandchildren, Drake (Ashley) Deaton and Michaela Deaton; two great-grandchildren; brother, Duane (Maxine) Deaton, brothers in law; Don Hartwig, Kenneth (Myrna) Hartwig and Larry (Diane) Hartwig; sister-in-law, Joyce (Brock) Knoll; and a host of other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy Deaton; and sister, Wilma Saffell.

A celebration of life will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street in Des Moines. Visitation will occur one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be directed toward Valley View Village or Hope Lutheran Church in loving memory of Vernon.
