David Bates

David Bates, 80, died Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter.

David loved woodworking and made beautiful furniture and toys. He served in the Korean War from September 1951 until September 1953. He later was employed by Pittsburgh Steel Co. for 30 years.

David’s family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marguerite; son, Larry (Lynda) Bates; granddaughter, Kayla Bates all of Des Moines; grandson, Erik (Khalia) Bates of Virginia Beach, VA and brother-in-law, Lloyd Deierling of Moberly, MO.
