Hazel Markovetz, 95, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Calvin Community. Born on August 11, 1916, Hazel was the daughter of Archie and Borgine Hoyt. She was a member of the Westkirk Presbyterian Church. In 1985, she retired from the Des Moines Public School System as an elementary school teacher.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Carol Dixon; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Markovetz, and her son, Alton Markovetz.

A private family burial will be held at a later date at the New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa.

Carol and family,

I have not seen your mother in a number of years, but I noted in the paper that she had made her transition. I knew her when we both attended Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church. She had retired, and we both spent time in Church activities. She was delightful.....a joy to know. I remember going to a circle meeting at her house several times....so gracious, and full of wonderful stories about her family, her teaching and her travels. She always had something to show us that she had gotten overseas when visiting you, or something you had sent her. She delighted in you and her grandchildren. I last saw her several years ago at the Urbandale Senior Center. She was so remarkable even then.

Carol:

My husband I are spending a few weeks in AZ and was able to finally have access to the internet. I always check the Decorah Journal website and was so saddened to read your mother's death notice on their obituary column. But, what a very long and productive life your mother enjoyed! I do know that my mother and your mother kept their correspondence as current as they could; mother so enjoyed the relationship with your mother through the years especially when you lived across the road from us east of York.

I will keep looking for the committal service date for your mother and hope that we will be home for it. We will be leaving AZ on Feb. 28th and mother does not return until May 14th.

Again, my sympathies to you and your family as you mourn the loss of your dear mother.

Carol,
I remember your mom and you from when I was a kid and we lived on the farm next to your aunt & uncle-Annie & Frank. I knew your mom was a school teacher and a very good one too!

Anyway, I just wanted to send my sympathies as I know how very hard it is when your mom dies, whether expected or not. Just be thankful for all the years and memories you have of her.

My sincere sympathy to all of you on the loss of your mother, grandmother and mother in law. I met Hazel when she worked at the va in des moines and we just connected and stay friends all these years. We both loved history and she had connections to winneshiek county.

I enjoyed her letters so much and she had so many interests. I would not have made a good student as I am a bad speller and writer.

I know she liked Calvin alot so am glad of that.

I was one of Mrs. Markovetz's 5th - 6th Grade Students when she taught in Urbandale at Olmsted School. Mrs. Markovetz was a wonderful teacher and instilled in many of us the love of teaching. My Mom Emma Nelson knew her well and she was admired by all. I graduated from Iowa State with a degree of Child Development and Teacher and am enjoying it all immensely in Lee Summit, Mo. Mrs. Markovetz will be missed by many. Our Family sends our deepest sympathy to you and your Family.

Hazel attended our summer Lutherlag Program at Luther College for many years. She was a charming, bright and inquisitive woman. Always sharp and a favorite of so many people who met her and got to know her. In the past few years she would write to us when she was no longer able to get to Decorah for her annual Lutherlag experience and would express her regrets and send greetings to all her friends here. She was a kind and loving soul. She will be missed. My sympathies to her family.

Hazel was always so pleasant and we enjoyed many conversations over the years. We were in Presbyterian Women's circle together for a long time. I know you will miss her, but you were blessed to have her with you for so many years. God Bless you.

Mrs. Markovetz was my 5th grade teacher at Olmstead Elementary during a very tumultuous year in her career. I will always be grateful for her encouragement and support of this kid who wanted to be in show business. Even after moving away from Iowa, I still visited Mrs. Markovetz when I came home and she's always been sharp, inquisitive and still supportive. I will miss our visits. Rest in peace, sweet lady.

I had the priviledge of driving Hazel many times through the Urbandale Caring Corps. When I would pick her up on Friday mornings, I always knew we would first go to Walgreens often to buy birthday cards for grandchildren or greatgrandchildren, then off to Fareway where we waited to go through the line of her favorite "checker". The next stop was HyVee where Hazel would get a chance to chat with an old friend who was there on Fridays handing out samples. If it was spring, we would then go to the greenhouse where she could get the purple petunias she wanted to put in the flower boxes below the windows. Once we went to Beverdale to the UPS store, again because there was a special person working there who she knew.

I really admired Hazel and always looked forward to driving her. Sometimes we would sit in the driveway after shopping and finish our conversation about life and how to live it. She lived it as independently as anyone can. Rest in peace, Hazel

Our sincere sympathy to you. Hazel taught at my rural school, Howard Center #7, southeast of Lime Springs. She also was a great friend to Bill's aunt Nellie Richards in Des Moines. She has lived a long, wonderful life. May your memories comfort you.

My heart goes out to you at the loss of your mother and grandmother. I first met Hazel when she sold for World Book and I worked in their office. I lost track of her until I saw her again at Westkirk a couple of years ago. I enjoyed visiting with her. She always had an upbeat and pleasant attitude. May God surround you with His love and comfort. I will miss seeing her at church now.
