Norma J. Weigel, 70, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice.
Norma was born August 6, 1941, to Howard and Blanche Speck, in Des Moines. She worked alongside her husband for 35 years at Weigel Excavating and Grading. Norma was a long-time member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, and enjoyed making ceramics. Her greatest joy came from spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma is survived by her husband of 35 years, Richard Weigel; children, Marty (Deann) Hallberg, Jeff (Jane Gunther) Miles, James (Carrie) Weigel, Craig (Michele) Miles, Teresa (Rollie Graham) Wolf, Robin (Michael) Sundell, Shelly (Rich) Steeve, Randy Weigel, and Melisa Burr; 25 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; father, Howard Speck, Sr.; brother, Howard Speck, Jr.; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Speck; and sister, Deborah Speck.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3820 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, with burial at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
Memorial contributions may be given to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Another leaf has fallen from the Nittler Family Tree. Norma was a good wife and mother while courageously battling health problems. Rest in peace Cousin.

Jeff, Craig and Shelly your mother was my friend for almost 50 years. We lived together and traveled together with you and my two boys Bill and Steve and Truman. She babysit all three of my boys as we took turns taking care of you and them while the other worked. She married Dick and I married Jerry and our lives moved apart and I left Des Moines but I never forgot your mom. She was there for me when my son Steven died and I wish I could be there for you but I still work and can't get to Des Moines in time. I will never forget her or you. Dick, you became a friend and I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know you children as well as I wanted to but they will also be in my heart she loved them all so much and talked about all of you whenever we talked.I will be with you all as you send her to the other side. Thank you so much for thinking of me when Norma passed and I thank your granddaughter Missy for making the call. We always intended to get together again and I am sorry that it didn't happen. Everyday I become aware of how short life can be. Just know that I loved her and that she knew be better than probably anyone else in my life.
