George Nelson

George Robert “Bob” Nelson, 80, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Bright Kavanagh House. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. A visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. scripture service, Thursday, January 5, at the church. Burial will be at St. Henry’s Cemetery in Henry, SD.

Bob was born on January 23, 1931, to George W. and Ella (Johnson) Nelson on a farm near Henry, SD. He went to a rural grade school and Henry High School. After high school he went to trade schools at Springfield, SD and Wahpeton, ND, specializing in electrician training. He joined the Navy in 1951, and was stationed on the USS St. Paul, attaining the rank of 1st Petty Officer First Class in the E Division. He married Betty Kittelson on August 23, 1952. Following his service in the US Navy, he worked as an electrician and then became employed with the Nike missile sites in Rapid City, and later in New Brighton, MN. When the sites closed, he worked for the National Weather Service as an electronic technician in Des Moines, retiring in 1986. Following retirement he worked part time for Priority Express and in maintenance at Christ the King Church.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Daniel and James (Teri); seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott; grandson, Kirk Nelson and great grandson, Brayden Iles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Christ the King Church or as the donor wishes.
