Service Details

Ben Mueller, 88, went to his sleep on January 1, 2012. Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home.

For over 40 years, Ben was owner and operator of Deaton Feed & Grain on NE 44th Street in Des Moines. He was known affectionately as “Mr. Deaton” throughout the State of Iowa. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Ben was a faithful Jehovah’s Witness and a longstanding member of the Highland Park Congregation.

A survivor of a diphtheria outbreak in the 1920’s, Ben carried within him a genuine kindness and impenetrable light that is demonstrative of one that understands the precious gift of life that is in each one of us. A supremely gentle man, he freely gave of himself to anyone he spoke to. Friday’s and Saturday’s saw crowds at Deaton Feed of those who simply cherished the opportunity to speak for a while with a man that was often called “the nicest man in the world.”

As a footstep follower of Christ, Ben was a wonderful friend, father and mentor to many. Ben was always up-building in his speech, always patient and forever forgiving.

Ben was especially blessed by his introduction and subsequent marriage to his wonderfully loving wife Joy. The two of them together were a lesson in true love and a glimpse of the Kingdom that is yet to come.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mueller, Clifford & Eleanor Bates, Douglas Bates and his daughter Melanie Sheldahl.

Ben is survived by his loving wife, Joy; children, Benjamin, Victoria Mayo, Steven Mayo, twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, many cousins in Missouri, and millions of Brothers and Sisters in the faith.
