Betty Ruth Sandall, 80, died November 8 at Mercy Hospital. She was born September 9, 1926 in Bassett, Nebraska to Chris and Blanche Andersen. Betty was raised in the Rock County area. She graduated from Rock County High School and attended Nebraska Central College in Central City, Nebraska, where she received her Teacher’s Certificate. She taught elementary education in Rock County for two years and married Donald O. Sandall on January 18, 1947 in Bassett. They resided in Bassett until May 1962 when they moved to Ogallala, Nebraska where they operated the Mobil Service Station on Highway 30. Later they managed the I-80 Inn in Ogallala and were owners and operators of the Oregon Trail Motel and Service Station for several years. Betty also worked as a nurses aide at the Ogallala Community Hospital. Several years after her husband passed away she moved to Valentine, Nebraska where she offered home health care to several residents while living in Valentine, Nebraska.
In September 2003, Betty moved to Des Moines, Iowa, from Valentine as she wanted to be closer to family. Betty was a member of the Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church and the Polk County Senior Center. She was an avid card player and enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, Marvin.
Survivors include one son, Danny of Holdredge, Nebraska; two daughters, LeAnne (Mrs. Doug) Bermel of Des Moines and Kathy Soto of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Michelle (Mrs. Jim) Walters, Stacy, Jeremy, Jacob, and Justin; and two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Connor.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13 at Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edward Clevenger officiating. Burial will be in Bassett, Nebraska at the Bassett Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorials be made to the Polk County Senior Center. Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
