Service Details
Marjean Reed, 54, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be held on 4:00 to 7:00 pm Monday, January 2, 2012, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The funeral service will be on 11:00 am Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines. A private burial will be held Wednesday at Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden, Iowa.
A reception will be held at 12:00 pm Wednesday following the graveside service at the United Methodist Church in Glidden for family and friends.
Marjean was born on October 21, 1957, in Carroll, Iowa, to Marjorie (Graves) and Darrell Nielsen. She graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School in 1976 and attended nursing college at Morningside, graduating in 1981. She was a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital for 15 years and was a Surgical Educator at Des Moines University for the past 10 years. Marjean enjoyed golf, gardening, cooking, water skiing, traveling, art, and music.
Her memory will be cherished by her husband, Dr. Kendall Reed; sons, Tanner Tryon and Travis (Lorrie) Tryon; daughter, Mandy (Josh) Lamberson; step-sons, Richard (Nicole) Kendall-Reed, Christopher (Andrea) Reed; step-daughters, Lori Wheeler and Leslie (Raymond) Reed-Silhanek; mother, Marjorie Nielsen; sister, Diane (Dave) Kazynski; step-grandchildren, Kendall, Liana, Savannah, Evan, Kyler and Kelsey; nephew, Justin Kazynski; niece, Shannon Kazynski; and great-nephew, Cohen Kazynski.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Marjean Reed Scholarship Fund at Des Moines University.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew her through DMU and she was a fantastic teacher and a friend to all the students. She was so kind and giving. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God comfort you and give you peace.

I am so so sorry for your loss. I have done Marjean's hair for awhile and have enjoyed our talks about our familys. She was awesome! I had no idea her life would end so soon. I'm sorry! I knew she was sick but didn't know it would happen so fast. I know she loved her kids and family and I just want you all to know how sad I am not to see her again. But yes I will, because I believe she is in Heaven with Jesus and that is the best thing ever. May her memory always live on in your hearts. And I pray God's peace will be with you all during this very difficult time.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine that you and your families are crushed with sorrow. I remember Marjean when she first started working at DMU when I was a student, and I know she is fondly remembered in the halls of Mercy's OR. Kendall,
It is with sadness that we write to express our thoughts and prayers upon hearing the news of Marjean's death. Even though Marty and I never had the opportunity to spend much time with Marjean, it is apparent the deep love and passion you have for her. The stories that we heard and the energy she had for family and others is impressive. We are greatful to know that she will no longer be suffering, and is now in a much better place -- always looking down on her family and all those individuals she has touched in her loving and caring way. My thoughts and prayers are with Marjean's family. I had the pleasure of attending a medical mission with Marjean in Belize and the blessing of learning from her in surgical skills. She was a wonderful person and will truly be missed by many. Her compassion for people has had a truly positive influence on my passion for patients. My sincere sympathy to you and your family in the loss of your wife. My husband died 9 years ago from pancreatic cancer and you were the most wonderful doctor who did his surgery and helped us cope with his cancer.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Marjean's family and loved ones. I was a grade ahead of Marjean in high school and remember her for her generosity to all and the loving free spirit she displayed always. As an avid runner in high school and currently I always loved watching her run the hurdles in high school and at Iowa State. Her seemingly effortless form, style, and grace made her one of a kind! She made this world a better place for many and her love will continue to live on in all she came in contact with!
