Barbara Williams, 83, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center.
Barbara was born July 14, 1928, in Des Moines, to Lloyd Shelton and Margaret Matthews. She was a music educator for Des Moines Public Schools for many years, and had served in the music department at Corinthian Baptist Church since the age of 11. She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta, Des Moines Chapter.
Barbara is survived by her children, Arzania (Karen) Williams II and Stephanie (G. Thomas) Furgerson; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd and Robert Shelton; sister, Effie Griffin; and a host of loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arzania Williams, Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Corinthian Baptist Church, 9th & School Streets, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

I was sorry to read Mrs Williams' obituary online today. In 1973, she was my music teacher at Douglas elementary. I remember one day when she came to school wearing a BLACK shoe and a BROWN shoe with her dress. She explained that she had gotten dressed in the dark that day. As a 5th grader, it was the funniest thing I'd EVER seen!!?? Another day, while at Kmart with my mom, I saw Mrs Williams. My thought: "Teachers shop, too!!" The thought of Mrs Williams creates many happy memories for this 49 yr old. :) My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Im so sorry to hear of Ms. Williams passing. I was a student of hers from Kindergarten thru 5th grade at Douglas Elementary.
She will be missed and my thoughts and prayers are with her family.

What a beautiful lady that has now gone to be with her beloved Zook. Her gift of music gave joy to so many that she touched over the years.
God bless you and your family Stephanie...we all love you so very much. Kiss each of the kids for me and my heart is there with you..we love you Steph and family!
