Phyllis Arlouine Barnhill, 87, died Sunday, December 18, 2011, at Millpond Healthcare Center in Ankeny, Iowa. She was born August 31, 1924, in Maxwell, Iowa, to Clyde and Lucy (Holsinger) Herman.
She served as a member of the Elkhart City Council, Elkhart Christian Church, and Women’s Club. Phyllis enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with family, watching Nascar and baseball games, and recently had taken up Wii bowling.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Arlys (Jerry) McCauley, Charlene (Hugh) Hammond, and Karen Ahlman; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; son-in-law, Larry Ahlman; and her brothers, Ernest and Donald Herman.
Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at Elkhart Christian Church, 252 NW Washington Street in Elkhart. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m., with burial at Elkhart Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elkhart Christian Church in loving memory of Phyllis.

I had the great honor of being one of Phyllis's friends at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. She was sweet and caring and so young at heart. I pray for her family as I know they will have big holes in their hearts without Phyllis in their lives. I am grateful she is at rest as the last years have been hard. I look forward to a cup of coffee with my friend again one day in Heaven. Our deepest sympathy to her family.

I met Phyllis in Arizona when she was visiting her daughter Karen. What a wonderful lady she was. She knew how to make you feel part of her family and it was fun to see her at the Casino. I know she will be greatly missed by many and it was my pleasure to know her even for a little bit. May you all be comforted in knowing her love and spirt will live on in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
