Service Details

The Lord called Irene home on Saturday, December 17, 2011. A life-long Des Moines resident, she was born on March 30, 1924. After graduation from Lincoln High School, she worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny building ammunition during WW II. Her primary employment was at Firestone Tire and Rubber Plant for 36 years. She also served as Secretary of Firestone’s United Rubber Workers Union.

Irene’s life was all about Faith, Family and Friends. She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Anthony’s parish. Irene promised her father on his deathbed that she would care for her mother. Thus she became her mother’s dedicated caregiver for life. She had many friends and was always there for that friend in need.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Beatrice and her brothers Cheto, Joe and Vic. She is survived by her sisters Rose Mele and Catherine (Tina) Jackovich, many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

A visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a vigil service at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with burial following at Glendale Cemetery.
