Clarence Van Gundy, 73, died peacefully at his home Saturday, November 26, 2011 from a lung ailment.

Clarence was born August 2, 1938, to Raymond and Florence (Victor) Van Gundy in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962. Clarence was well known throughout the community as a legendary meat cutter for Hinky Dinky, Smith’s East Side Meats and most recently Walmart in Altoona. He was a long time member of the Elk’s Lodge #98 in Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren and his special buddy Max.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wilma; children, Jerry Van Gundy, Susan Richards and Rob Van Gundy; grandchildren, Heather and Amanda Richards and Robby and Raini Van Gundy; great-grandson, Max Richards; brothers, Robert (Diane), Mike (Mary Kay) and Richard (Linda) Van Gundy; sisters, Madeline Austin and Alice Weber; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday November 30, 2011 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
