Anna Gust

Anna Kathryn Gust, 84, passed away November 16, 2011. Services will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, November 28, 2011, at Mercy Court Apartment Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Born March 27, 1927, in Waterloo, IA, Anna married James Gust in August 1947, and lived in Des Moines for 64 years. She worked for 22 years at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She did volunteer work there as well as at Mercy Medical Center and the Des Moines Playhouse.

Anna loved learning and was an avid reader, so she took much pleasure in being a mentor for St. John’s Lutheran Church after-school program. She used her experience with heart bypass surgery by serving as a volunteer counselor for other heart patients at Mercy Medical Center. She also enjoyed learning as she traveled around the country with her husband and then later with her granddaughter. She especially enjoyed visiting her sisters and brother.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, James. Survivors include her son, Michael of Des Moines; her daughter Carolyn (Jerome) Kehret of Norwalk; her sisters, Virginia Abney of Cedar Rapids and Colleen Wayne of Winter Park, FL; her brother James (Lorena) McGovern of Pearl City, HI; and 3 grandchildren.
