Steve “Burf” Person, 57, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday May 5, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial at Canfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held from Noon to 8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home
Steve was born in Des Moines on November 15, 1949 and graduated from East High School in 1967. Steve earned a BA in History and Political Science with minors in Latin and Religion from Luther College in 1971and was a member of the ZPT fraternity. After graduating, Steve began his career in the trucking industry, working for P.I.E., Spector Red Ball, and Western Transportation prior to purchasing M&M Cartage in 1991.
Steve married Brenda Brockway in 1975 and had two beautiful daughters, Brandi and Brooklyn. He coached East Des Moines Girls Softball and SE Polk High School Softball; taught Sunday school at Ivy Centennial United Methodist Church but remained a member of Rising Sun Church of Christ, and was a member of the Elks Lodge #98 in Pleasant Hill. Steve was Past President of the Komondor Club of America and a season ticket holder for the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Steve loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Brenda; daughters, Brandi, and her husband Aaron Jackson and Brooke Joy Person; grandchildren, Brock, Boman, and Brili Jackson; parents, Gene and Wilma Person; sister, Tonda, and her husband Nate Hanson; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Dorothea Person; maternal grandparents, Joe and Alta Caldwell; and parents-in-law, B.J. and Darlene Brockway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Komondor Club of America Rescue, Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation, or an organization of your choice.
