George Lee Robbins, 73, died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born October 16, 1938 to John and Pearl Robbins in Des Moines.
George enjoyed working as a manager at Walmart in Altoona for the past ten years. He was a dedicated employee and had a personality that was loved by all who knew him. George liked a good cigar and nice cars. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
George is survived by his wife, Cindy; son, Nick (JoAnn) Robbins; daughters, Heather Gilbert, Noel (Tim) Van Engen, Georgette (Terry) Foster; step-daughter, Christine Templeton; step-son, Matt (Sarah) Martin; seven grandchildren, Alisha Van Engen, Ashley Van Engen, Kylie Robbins, Zachary Van Engen, Peyton Martin, Hailey Foster, Brooklyn Martin; one great-grandchild, Kaden Van Engen; brother, Jerry (Toni) Robbins; sisters, Ruby Millard, Shirley (Jack) Davidson and Vivian (Bud) Hastie. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston in loving memory of George.

George was like a father to many of us. He was so caring. He always found the time to chat with you and to help you if you were feeling bad about anything. He is the best boss I ever had. I am sure going to miss him. I am glad he is out of pain now. And watching over all of us now. I will him terribly.

Prior to my divorce from Heather a few years ago, George was my father-in-law however, he was more like an actual father, especially after my dad passed away in 1988. I am so sorry he suffered all these years and especially this past year. The only good thing of his passing is that he is ridden from that pain and suffering and is with Jesus. God has a plan for him! He was a good man.
I want to send my condolences to all the family but especially to my x-wife Heather as she was very close to him. Let God take you into his arms and hold you dear till the pain leaves. He's got all the time in the world to comfort you! Let him!
He will be missed terribly by all! Also to the many friends he acquired throughout his lifetime.
