Service Details

Bernard C. McDonough, 82, died Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Taylor House Hospice. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with burial following at Elm Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the funeral home.

Bernard was born September 13, 1929, in Des Moines. As a young man he grew up in foster homes, living with Cyril Gaul in Earling and Vitus Schurman in Lacona. Bernard was a veteran of the US Army. He was a self-employed carpet layer, and owner of Custom Carpet Service. Bernard married Norma Jean Poortinga in 1952 and to that union was born four children. Norma Jean passed away in 1979. In 1985 he married Dorothy Crouthamel. Together they enjoyed traveling including trips to Ireland and Hawaii. Bernard was an outdoorsman and enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was also a devout member of the Catholic Church.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Janet (Dwight) Sharp, Bernie (Twyla) McDonough, Dan (Cindy) McDonough, Gary (Teresa) McDonough; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
