Service Details

Emerson C. Blome, 94, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, November 18, 2011 with family and his pastor at his side. He is now rejoicing in the promise of God’s word and his reunion with his parents, Carl and Bertha Blome, his recently deceased sister Ruth, and his brothers, Lawrence and Richard Blome.

Emerson was born July 23, 1917 on a farm in Victor, Iowa. Early in life he learned the values of Christian faith which he carried throughout his life. He worked on the farm many years until he went to work for a military defense plant in Cedar Rapids and continued to help at the family farm. He eventually decided the best investment he could make was in learning and began college at Drake University, where he graduated with degrees in Social Science and Political Science in 1956. He then began his teaching career, working in Keokuk, Mitchellville, and Earlham. He eventually began his nearly twenty year role teaching special education students in Norwalk.

Emerson was an avid conversationalist and truly enjoyed a good visit. He had an amazing memory for people, facts and dates which he maintained until the end of his life. He also enjoyed learning new information on Iowa Public Television and playing the piano. He was active in Toastmasters for many years.

Survivors include his brother, Norman Blome of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Edna Blome; nephews, Bruce, Dan, and Randy Blome; niece, Carol Michell; and their spouses and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines, 8250 NW 62nd Avenue, Johnston, with burial following at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
