Service Details

Archie E. Hayes, age 64, passed away on November 16, 2011 from cancer. He was born April 17, 1947 to Ivadell and Gene Hayes in Shenandoah, Iowa. His family moved to Des Moines when he was in grade school. He grew up on the eastside of Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1965. After high school, he worked as a surveyor for the State Parks Department. In 1966, he was drafted into the Army, proudly served in Viet Nam and was honorably discharged in 1969. He went to work for the phone company, where he worked for 36 years before retiring from Qwest in 2005. He was a strong Union advocate and at various times, he served as Steward, VP and Interim President of the Local CWA Chapter.

Archie’s zest for life was hard to match. He was always up for a party. He loved to travel, gamble and cook. His passion for riding his Harley took him across the entire United States. He attended the Sturgis motorcycle rally at least 33 times. Recently, he replaced his Harley, with a Z28 Camaro Convertible.

He was easily amused and always enjoyed a good laugh. With his twinkling eyes, easy smile, full beard and quick wit, he was a force to be reckoned with, and sight to see.

He is survived by his best friend and life partner, Judi Scott; his beloved Mother, Ivadell Thomas; his siblings, Dennis Hayes, Maureen Beirman and Sherry Hayes; his children and step-children, Bob Hayes, Marlo Hand, Jay Scott and Jodi Airhart; his grandchildren, Tyler Chumbley, Caitlin Scott, Kevin and Nicke Hayes, Tori, Sammye, Delaney and Jax Hand; his Aunt, Donna Copic; and the rest of his family and friends.

His father, Gene Hayes and his step-daughter, Darcie Scott preceded him in death.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2011 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Fleur Drive.
