Mildred Dennis

Mildred Faye Dennis, 94, went to be with her Lord on Monday, November 14, 2011. Mildred was born July 19, 1917, in Miami, Oklahoma, to Mardia and Benjamin Franklin Smithley and was a long time resident of Des Moines, Iowa.

Mildred was married to Loren Dennis on May 23, 1938. To this union, they were blessed with three daughters, Nancy, Linda and Sue. Mildred and Loren were married for 59 years before Loren’s passing in 1998.

Mildred had many attributes in her life. To name a few, she was a homemaker, a hairdresser, a professional seamstress, and a great cook - especially her Boston Crème pie. She also spent many years as a nanny for a prominent doctor and his family in Des Moines. Above all else she was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed greatly.

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Nancy (Gary) Handley, Linda Greenwood, and Sue (David) Moede; her ten grandchildren; her 21 great-grandchildren; her four great-great grandchildren; and many friends.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Loren and two sons-in-law, Bill Smith and James Greenwood.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with a burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
