William Schumacher
October 28, 2011
William (Bill) D. Schumacher, 68, passed away at home on October 28, 2011. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov 2, 2011, with the funeral on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 10 a.m. Both will be held at Ss. John and Paul Parish, 1401 1st Ave S. in Altoona, Iowa. Interment will be at Altoona Cemetery in Altoona.
Bill's passion was sports and to celebrate this, you are welcome to wear your favorite team shirt to the visitation (excluding Iowa State or the Bears). Anything black and gold, blue and gold or green and gold is encouraged.
Bill was born March 23, 1943 in Clarion, Iowa. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1961 and attended his 50 year reunion this summer. He attended UNI, Iowa, Iowa Central, Umpire School and the NY Institute of Finance. Bill lived in Altoona for 40 years coaching baseball, softball and basketball for several years, serving on many boards for the community and was an active member of Ss. John and Paul Parish as an usher and part of the Knights of Columbus. Bill retired from MidAmerican Energy after 30 years of service, but continued to live a full and active life spending time with his family and grandchildren, substituting at Southeast Polk, working and golfing at Terrace Hills, working out at the Campus, riding his bike and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Milwaukee Brewers and was most thrilled to have watched the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl four times! Go Pack!
Bill had an infectious laugh and put a smile on everyone’s faces. He will be missed by his wife, 5 daughters, 4 son-in-laws, 12 grandchildren, 2 sisters, 6 brother-in-laws, 4 sister-in-laws, not to mention countless friends and extended family. Bill was a kid at heart which made him a best friend to his grandchildren. His son-in-laws were the sons he never had and were always a phone call away when he needed them. He was proud of his girls for all of their accomplishments and cherished every moment he had with his family. Bill was a son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa, biker, golfer, coach, Brewer, Hawkeye and Packer.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Connie, his children Elizabeth "Betsy" (Rich) Byrnes, Jennifer "Jenny" (Mark) Crawford, Caroline "Carrie" (Garth) Jones, Jessica "Jessie" Schumacher (Chad Kenworthy), Melisa "Lisa" (Justin) Harrison, his grandchildren Adam, Aaron, Aiden, Louis, Luke, Hank, Anna, Andrew, Ellie, Eily, Sage, Dylan and several other relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Adrain and Hattie Schumacher.
Memorial contributions can be directed to Ss. John and Paul Parish or Southeast Polk Dollars for Scholars in loving memory of Bill Schumacher.

To Lisa and Justin, and your entire family - so sorry about your dad. I know that your entire family is very close and will miss him greatly. I wasn't privileged to know your dad - just met him at your wedding, but I wish I had known him. Sounds like he was a wonderful man. Again, so sorry for your loss. Love, Aunt Vicki

Bill was a great guy. When he would sub in my classroom, I always knew things would go well and that I didn't need to worry. He was a natural working with the students. His smile always made you feel better. He will be missed greatly.

Connie and your loving family,
I wish I had the words to help you through your pain and grief, but I can't find them. I can only tell you how sorry I am for your loss of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law. My prayers for you will continue for as long as Bill remains a part of me, and that will be the rest of my life.
Bill has been a friend of mine since we were four years old and I always considered him as my best friend. To me, that was a privilege that I cherished. From altar boys to roommates in Des Moines we shared some wonderful times. He was a sports nut, a clown and many other things, but most of all he was a good man who loved life and knew the true meaning of friendship. Laughter came easy for him and he had no problem sharing it all of those around him.
Many wonderful things have been said and written already about this man and many more kind words will follow. Bill earned and deserves them all. I think Bill has more friends than anyone I know just because he was always just Bill.
But above all of his friends, his sport teams and everything else, William Schumacher placed you Connie, his girls and their families on top. He was so proud of you and loved you deeply. Your love for him was just as great and that makes the pain so deep within you. Again, my love and prayers will never stop. My God bless you and keep you during these dark days

Connie and Family,
What a shock it was to receive Jenny's email sharing the sad news of Bill's passing. My most recent contact with Bill was this past year as we met as committee members of the 50th Clarion,Iowa Class of 61 reunion. What fun we had as a committee reminicing and laughing so hard we got tears in our eyes. The night of the banquet he did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies. He put a lot of effort and energy into helping everyone at the reunion to have a GREAT time. He remebered and I had forgotten that he and I were a couple for the teen dance at the Seventeen studios in Ames one year. Everyone participating had to be a part of a couple. We came together and we went home together but had a lot of fun in between. Bill was a GREAT encourager and loved a good time. I am so sorry you need to walk through this valley but there are mountain tops ahead. I know this is true since I have walked through this valley six years ago when my Bill died of an instant heart attack.
May God bring peace to you and your family through his grace and mercy.

Dad,
We love you so much and miss you so much already. We keep thinking you will walk up the stairs and tell us to be quiet, or grab us by the back of the neck just to say hello. We are thinking of you constantly - crying, laughing, and crying again. It's just not the same without you here. We're helping mom with everying, so don't worry about that. It makes us feel better knowing that you're in heaven with your parents and probably shooting a 72 at golf with Jim. We don't want to be doing any of this though, we just wish you were here. Your son-in-laws have been amazing through all of this, but that wouldn't surprise you. I hope you are seeing and hearing all of the kind words people are writing to us or telling us. It's awesome how many people's lives you touched. We still can't believe you're not with us, but we can't wait to see you again and hear your laugh.
We love you!
