Mary Louise Nogel, 90 of Des Moines, passed away peacefully at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on Thursday, October 27, 2011.

Mary was born March 8, 1921 in Des Moines. She graduated from East High School in 1939 and worked for many years as the lunch room manager at Visitation Catholic School in Des Moines and as a teacher’s aide in the Des Moines Public Schools.

In 1945, Mary married Frank Nogel of Pittsburg, Kansas at Visitation Catholic Church in Des Moines and they lived in Springfield, Missouri, Howard, Kansas, Commerce, Oklahoma and Carlisle, Iowa before settling in Des Moines in 1950. She was a member of the Visitation Church Altar and Rosary Society, Lebanon Club of Des Moines, Young Phoenician Club of Des Moines, East High School Alumni Association, DAV Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary volunteered her time to help with numerous activities at both Visitation and Holy Family school. She loved to cook, play cards, bowl and enjoyed crafts. Her biggest joy in life was her family and the time she spent with her children and grandchildren attending their numerous activities and events over the years.

She is survived by five children; Gary (Jeannie) Nogel of Overland Park, Kansas, Sara Harris of Denver, Colorado, Patty (Lad) Grove of Huxley, Iowa, Stephen (Pamela) Nogel of Omaha, Nebraska and Frank Jr. (Cheryl) of Ames Iowa, eight grandchildren; Cinnamon (Wayne) East, John (Kristina) Harris, Ryan Grove, Kathryn, Stephen Jr. and Nicholas Nogel and Ashley and Joseph Nogel, one great-grandchild; Ainsley East, sister- in-laws; Bernice Kouri, Clovene Morrissey and Lu (Jim) Jouras and brother-in-law Dutch Nogel, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sarah Kouri, her husband of 56 years Frank, four brothers, Frank, Harry, Tom and Sam Kouri and her granddaughter Amber Nogel.

Hamilton’s Funeral Home at 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, is handling the arrangements. The family will greet friends on Sunday, October 30 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm at Hamilton’s, a prayer service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31 at Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church (formerly Visitation Church) at 1271 East 9th Street, Des Moines. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Holy Family Catholic School in Des Moines or the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

The family of Mary would like to thank all the caregivers at Ballard Creek in Huxley, Luther Park in Des Moines and at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames who cared for and watched over Mary the last two years.
