Phillip "Jerry" Smith

Jerry Smith, 78, passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center on October 21, 2011 after a five year battle with various illnesses, including cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Berean Assembly of God Church, 5299 E. University Ave. in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Private interment will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Jerry was born January 11, 1933 in Newton, Iowa. A lifelong resident of Des Moines and Pleasant Hill, he retired after 40 years as a mechanic for Freightliner of Des Moines.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Della Smith; daughter, Phyllis Smith (Jim Boland); son, Rick (Robi) Smith; granddaughters, Venessa (Jeremy) McConkey, Valerie (Mark) Mullin, and Vania Boland; grandson, James Boland; and brothers, Marvin (Ros) Smith and Jack (Theresa) Smith.

Jerry’s life was greatly enriched by his grandchildren, friends, and family. When his children were little, he enjoyed coaching little league. He also enjoyed dancing and watching football and baseball. Jerry could fix anything and he was always available to help out his friends and family.
