Joyce Brotherton, 61, passed away Friday, October 14, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born July 29, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa to Paul (Jack) and Lucinda Mirs.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Joyce was strong, courageous, and a fighter. She always saw the bright side of things. She was a loving wife and mother, and was always willing to help anyone.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Lewis; son, Brad (Sarah) Brotherton and their children, Karlee, Kassidy, Emma, Sofie, and Tristan; daughter, Heather (Mike) Frank and their children, Nick, Aiden, and Haley; daughter, Amanda (Ben) Peterson and their children, Jacob and Drew; daughter, Tammy (Rick) Thompson and their children, Ricky, Jessica (husband, Tim and child, Teegan), Landen, and Lillianna; mother, Lucinda Mirs; sister, Sandy (Dale) McKiney; and aunt, Leona Flynn.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul (Jack) Mirs.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Polk City Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 19 at the funeral home.

I was sadden at the passing of Joyce Brotherton. Death may cast a shadow over you as you go about your daily life. Your love ones death brings you face-to-face with the fact that she is gone too soon. While you call to mind the happy memories, you may also remember the enormity of the loss. But, Do not let your hearts be troubled. (John 14:27) May you find comfort as the the last enemy, death will be done away with. (1 Corinthians 15:25, 26). Let this time be a tribute to his wonderful life.

i took care of joyce before she went to the university and am sorry ro hear of her opassing. she was a very nice lady and the loving family she has shows the kind of person she was. accept my sympathy you are all in my thought and prayers

Louie, Sue Patterson and I worked for you at McDonald's on Grand when I was in high school, and of course we remember Joyce and your devotion to her. We are so sorry for your loss, but grateful that you have a large family to support you. Our prayers are with you.
