Eugene "Geno" Learned
October 10, 2011
Eugene “Geno” Learned, 71, passed away at home Monday, October 10, 2011. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
Geno was born in Sioux City, IA on October 15, 1939 to Evelyn Learned. He grew up in Sioux City and worked for Zenith Radio where he met his wife of 38 years, Nancy. They moved to Des Moines in 1979. Geno worked for the West Des Moines School District for 30 plus years as a bus driver. He loved driving the Tigers sports teams to victory. He also worked as a jailer for the Clive Police Department. Geno had a strong sense of adventure for food. He and his son Chad loved to try out all of the new restaurants in town and were the first to see all the new release movies. He was also a devoted blood donor contributing over 30 plus gallons, with 15 gallons to Life Serve Blood Center alone.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nancy; sons, Chad and Christopher (Ryoko) Learned; grandchildren, Mion and Kai; and his sister, Darlene Jaeger. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Geno, I will never forget the good times we had, the talks we had about everything and anything, with Chad, and Alex; your infectious laugh, your strong handshake, your joking way; these are things I will never forget. I remember helping you and Chad build the deck around your pool. We had a great time that day. I remember you always said, "just come on over anytime, you don't need an invitation". Lori and I always felt welcome at Nancy and your place. You both were always so incredibly cordial and giving. You were always so humble, you never talked much about yourself, but you were always interested in how everyone else was doing and what everyone else had to say. I will miss you my friend. Your candle will never go out in our minds. Our sincerest of condolences go out to the entire Learned family. May peace be with you.

I got to know Geno while working at Peoples Bank in Clive. He was always a bright spot in the day, for not only me, but the rest of the bank staff! While I didn't know him all that well, he seemed like a friend forever! My condolences to Chad and his family!

Nancy -
I am so sorry to hear about Gene. I worked with him at the schools for 20 years and enjoyed every minute of it!! We went on many bus trips together and you could always count on him to have a few tricks up his sleeve. I particularly enjoyed the cribbage tournaments we had at work along with the Friday night poker games. He was one in a million.

I was really sorry to hear about Gene. I didn't know him that well, but do have a few memories of him from the early years at Preferred Risk, at Christmas parties, Schreckfests, etc.
Nancy, your boys, and the rest of your family, especially precious little Mion, are in my thoughts.
