Myra Van Horne

Myra Newbolt Van Horne, 94, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Calvin Manor in Des Moines. She has donated her body for research at the University of Iowa and requested that no services be planned.

Myra was born on March 19, 1917, to Mineola (Brafford) and George Newbolt in Shelbyville, KY. She completed her Associates Degree in Arts at William Woods College in Fulton, MO, her Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Missouri in Columbia, and her Master of Arts at the University of Iowa. Myra spent 50 years of her life teaching. It was one of her greatest joys. She retired from Iowa State Rehabilitation Services in 1980, where she taught life skills for disabled adults.

Myra was an active member and leader at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City and a lifetime member of American Association of University Women. After retirement she volunteered for Mercy Hospital at the information desk.

Her memory is cherished by her daughter, Judith Couture, and nieces, Kathryn (Morton) Davis, Betty Sweeney and Alice (Chuck) Mathias. Myra was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Van Horne.
