Constance “Connie” Ann Carlson Johnson, 85, died Friday, October 7, 2011, following a short illness. She was born August 30, 1926, to Helen (Walder) and Eskil Carlson in Des Moines.

Connie was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church and continued her membership with Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. She was very active in her church, serving on the church council, lending her voice to the church choir, and providing leadership in many other ways.

Connie earned her BA degree in 1948 from the University of Iowa. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and continued to be active with it into her later years. She was also a member of the Scottish Highlanders while at the University of Iowa. Connie was a devoted Hawkeye fan, holding season football tickets for over 50 years. She was a member of the board of the Business Women’s Association.

Connie was the president of three PTA boards at Hillis Elementary, Franklin Junior High, and Hoover High School. She was active in two bridge clubs for over 60 years. Connie enjoyed golf and traveling, most recently returning from a trip to France. She was a member of the Wakonda Golf and Country Club for 50, years and learned to hunt with her husband, Harold.

Connie is survived by her husband of 25 years, Harold; children, Allan (Elizabeth) Carlson, Susan (Michael Mendelson) Carlson, and Doug Carlson; step-daughters, Sara (Ray) Kinley, Susan (Craig) Walter, and Julie (Alan) Matsumoto; grandchildren, Anders (Emelyne) Carlson, Sarah-Eva Carlson, Anna (James) Garrison, Miriam Carlson, Aaron Mendelson, Noah Mendelson, Dan (Kara) Carlson, Michael Carlson, Kelly Carlson, Katie Walter, Mallory Matsumoto, and Monica Matsumoto; great-grandson, Beckett Garrison; and a host of beloved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harry B. Carlson; and sister, Christine Larson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2011, at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church or Harry B. Carlson/KPMG Endowed Chair at the University of Iowa.
