Marvin Barfield, 83, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, from complications of lymphoma.

Marvin was born in Greeleyville, South Carolina, on October 28, 1927, and throughout his life remained a true southern gentle man.

In 1947 he moved to Des Moines to attend Open Bible College, where he met and married Mary Gorham of Mason City in 1953. He served as a medical technician in the Army during the Korean War. After returning from the war, Marvin worked in the grocery store business, with most of his career at Super Value Stores, and then later Dahl’s Foods.

Marvin is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary; his son, Dan (Linda) Barfield; daughters, Marcia Barfield and Julie Barfield; and his brother, Leland (Pat) Asbill.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Barfield.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 pm Monday, October 10, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A funeral service will be held at 10 am Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Fort Des Moines Open Bible Church, 1116 Army Post Road. A private burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery.
