James “Jim” Newton McCauley Sr., 89, was born May 9, 1922 in Lucas, Iowa, the son of Newton and Celeste (Jones) McCauley. He passed away peacefully of congestive heart failure Monday, October 3, 2011 at Taylor House in Des Moines.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy and retired from Armstrong Tire in 1984 after 28 years of faithful service.
James is survived by his children, James McCauley Jr., Cynthia (Mike) Cox, Linda (Randy) Edwards and Bob Astley; grandchildren, Jimmy Meek, Melissa Olson, Laurie Raun, Tyler Warren, Tammy Jo Laird and Michael Alan Astley; two great-grandchildren; other loving relatives and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn Rose McCauley; son, John Michael Astley; two brothers; one sister and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW in Altoona, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Taylor House in loving memory of Jim.

Please accept my most sincere sympathies in the loss of your dad. I loved my Uncle Jim very much and will miss him. Now they are all together celebrating in heaven, a family reunited.

I will always have fond memories of playing around on Grandma and Grandpa McCauley's farm and down the hill during and after the building of Uncle Jim and Aunt Evelyn's house.
My deepest sympathies to Jimmy, Linda, Cindy and Bob and their families at this most difficult time.
Now Betty Jean, Jim, Jack and Dad are together with Grandma and Grandpa and all are at peace.

It is with our deepest sympathy the loss of the greatest neighbor and friend. Jim was our guardian angel that watched over our kids for 20 years as they grew up to be young adults, greeted our pets with dog treats and always had a smile on his face. We are so blessed to have had Jim and Evelyn as our neighbors for so many years. We have so many fond memories and will always be grateful to have had such a loving and caring neighbor as part of our family.

I was very sorry to hear of Jims passing but it was for the best
cause he and Bill did not want to live the way they had to live
these last days. They were both hard workers all their lives and
spending it laying around the house was not their cup of tea.
They will both be missed terribly. God bless Jims family at this
time especially.
