Service Details

Bernhard Einar Erickson, 88, of Norwalk, died on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at the Veterans Hospital Community Living Center in Des Moines.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2011, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines.

Bernhard was born on June 5, 1923, in Odin, Minnesota, to Einar and Alice (Dahl) Erickson. He grew up on farms in southern Minnesota, Estherville and Pomeroy, Iowa. On December 22, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the minesweeper U.S.S. Gwin in the Pacific Theater until May 21, 1946.

On November 22, 1947, he married Louise Holsman. Until his retirement in 1992, he farmed in Pocahontas and Lucas Counties. He enjoyed fishing, country music and the outdoors. He was awarded a Soil Conservation Award for contour farming.

Bernhard is survived by his wife, Louise; five children, Alice (Chris) Dahle, Paul (Nancy) Erickson, Ruth Cooper, Carol (Dan) Buren and Joanie (Steve) Johnson; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Noomi Anderson, Darlene (James) Clifford and Dorothy Arbtin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Floyd, Paul and Carl; and great-grandson, Owen Roberts.
