David Ortale, 70, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in Johnston. He was born August 25, 1941, in Des Moines, to Thomas and Anna Ortale.
David graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959, attended Drake University, and received his masters from Iowa State University. He was a high school educator and football coach at Lincoln High School for 35 years. David was a member of the Cyclone Corvette Club and The Sons of Italy, and was a lifelong Notre Dame fan. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and traveling.
David is survived by his four children, Ted (Lori) Ortale, Tim Ortale and Tony Ortale, Susan (James) Elwell; grandchildren, Jacob and Zachary Ortale, Gabriella and Anthony Ortale, and Paul, Theodore and Ada Elwell; and a brother, Gregory Ortale of Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; and his parents.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, September 16, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society of Iowa in loving memory of David.

When David talked about Bernice I thought of this:
"To love someone deeply gives you strength, Being loved by someone deeply gives you courage."
I will always remember David as a strong man with integrity.
This is my prayer for the family. I pray that they will be filled with hope of what is to come, heavenly Father, so that their grief is not the kind that's permanent or despairing. You've provided the gift of eternal life.
All who put their trust on you will live together again with you one day.
Grant them the faith to believe that just as you've promised, so it will be.

Dave was a wonderful person and it was an honor to have known him. The family has my deepest sympathy. Dave will be missed greatly.

Dear Ted, Tim, Tony, and Susie,
Even though I don't get the pleasure of chatting and laughing as much as I would like, I want you to know that I think of you all of the time...and I especially think of your loving parents. I developed a private bond with your family long, long ago...and you are forever in my heart, and my family as well. Your parents were funny, hard working, and dedicated; and loved you all so much. I am very sad for you, and I want you to know that I loved being a part of your family. The importance of family was evident to everyone around, and I feel so lucky to witness it all.
