Mrs. Barbara Jean Rowland passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. She was 79. Visitation is Thursday, September 15, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services are Friday, September 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church, East University Street and McCormick Avenue, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.

Mrs. Rowland was born on July 9, 1932, to Eugene Harris and Clarabelle Cavil in Des Moines. She was educated in the Des Moines school system.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd Rowland, Sr., on June 30, 1956. They shared 46 years of marriage before her husband passed away on July 21, 2002. She was a life-ong homemaker who was celebrated for her cooking skills. Holiday meals at her home were anticipated by her family with great joy. There were never any leftovers when it came to her delicious mustard greens. Her oxtail soup warmed the hearts and stomachs of many. She was a true matriarch and the glue that held her family together. She loved to go garage sales and enjoyed a good romance novel. She demonstrated her artistic side by crafting ceramics.

Mrs. Rowland was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Rowland, Sr.; a granddaughter, Christine Mallett; a brother, Frederick Harris; and her beloved son-in-law, Chancey Mallett, Sr. She is survived by four daughters, Jeana Clark, Tina Mallett, Laurie Rowland, and Susan Rowland, all of Des Moines; one son, Lloyd Rowland, Jr., also of Des Moines; one sister, Margaret Smith of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
