David Lee Whitman, 73, passed away September 9, 2011 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. He was born in Springville, IA , December 23, 1937 to John and Mabel Whitman.
David graduated from Marion High School and worked in the dairy industry for 36 years. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing golf with his sons. He loved being outdoors working in his yard and spending time with his family.
David is survived by his wife, Kay; children, Jeffrey (Jan) Whitman of Columbia, IL, Kevin (Jolene) Whitman of Naperville, IL, Susan (Will) Harris of Germantown, MD, and Brad (Estela) Whitman of Des Moines; brothers, Maurice, Larry (Dora), and James (Pam) Whitman; sisters, Jeanne (Bob) Pflughaupt and Linda Kofron; 13 grandchildren, Joe, Jill, James, John, Julia, Matt, Jennifer, Kathlene, Sydney, Brandon, Luke, Josh, and Thomas; and one great-grandchild, Alexia. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Bette Kost and Donna Whitman.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 12 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network in loving memory of David.

I was saddened to read of David's death. We go back a long time, and were very good friends at the ages of 14 or 15 when we both delivered the Cedar Rapids Gazette to its patrons in Marion. He was a stand-up guy and a good friend who I felt I could freely confide in. I remember especially our early Sunday morning excursions on our bikes when, after having delivered our Gazettes, we would ride just for the fun of it, often as I recall, with David's brother, Larry. One fall morning we went off "way into the country" - it's now all built-up - over the Martindale Bridge and Indian Creek and looked back over Marion and the commanding steeples of the adjacent Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the distance. After these rides we'd come back into town and head for the Hallwood Cafe on 7th Avenue where we'd drink steaming cups of hot chocolate and listen to the latest hits on the juke box (I remember "Bonaparte's Retreat" sung by Kay Starr). We were young and free and the world was not nearly the fearful place it is today. Obviously David had a great life and was very much loved. I'm happy to have known him and been his friend, and send his family my condolences.

It was a real shock for me to learn of Dave's passing. I worked with Dave for several years at Land O Lakes/Swiss Valley in CR. I always enjoyed Dave and fondly remember some of our discussions and arguements for that matter. Dave always had an opinion and was shy about sharing it.

We are so sorry to here about Dave. Thinking back we started rememberd the good times we had at shady hills campground. We will never forget the evenings setting on the camper decks or the fun we had playing farcle.
You will be rembered in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Kay & family,
We are deeply sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of Dave. We worked together at Sanitary Dairy and Swiss Valley Farms. We use to laugh and joked around a lot. He was a great man and I enjoyed the time I spent with him. When I retired I really enjoyed our talks when I would see him at Wal-Mart. Our thoughts and prayers go with your family at this time.

To the family,
We are very sorry for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. I worked with David at Sanitary dairies, Land of Lakes and Swiss valley dairies. I really enjoyed working with David, he was a great union man and always had a smile on his face and was always willing to help his co-workers. When the retirees have their breakfast every month we often talk about David and miss having him around.
