Doreen A. Stokes

Doreen Anne Stokes was born on March 26, 1948 in Escanaba, Michigan, to Herman and Pearl Bittner. She was the eldest of three girls. She passed away September 7, 2011, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Doreen was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend. Her life was defined by her deep love of family, uncommon friendships and devotion to the Catholic Church. Doreen had a remarkable pace of involvement in the community. Through many organizations, she gave much of herself and touched many lives along the way. She loved to read, to watch sports, and most of all, to talk. That gift of conversation, her caring personality and endless spirit will be dearly missed.

Doreen leaves behind her loving husband of 33 years, Allan; her children, Lucas (Tiffany) Erickson, Nathan (Shannon) Stokes and Emily Stokes; and her sister, Janice. “MoDo” will also be deeply missed by her three grandchildren, Matty, Meg, and Josie.

Doreen was met in heaven by her parents and her sister, Joanne.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a rosary to begin at 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2011, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Des Moines.
