Service Details

George Ceolla, 71, passed away August 21, 2011, at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines, Iowa, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 11, 1940, in Ironwood, Michigan, to George and Ramona Ceolla. After completing his journalism degree at Marquette University, George came to Des Moines and embarked on his photography career with the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Later, he went on to have his own business as a freelance photographer where he had many opportunities to meet interesting people and tell their stories through the lens of his camera. Some of his best work was captured on film by photographing America’s homeless in an attempt to raise awareness of this social issue.

George always looked for an opportunity to meet and talk to individuals that fed his never-ending need for knowledge. Even as he entered Hospice, George continued to feed his need for knowledge through the research of famous etchings created by Rembrandt.

In retirement, he left Des Moines for the simple and serene life aboard his sailboat. He sailed the Sea of Cortez and Puget Sound for several years before returning to Wisconsin to be closer to family. He had a great passion for collecting fine art and antiques and was a master craftsman. His appreciation for classical music was clear as friends and neighbors entered his home to hear it playing 24 hours a day. May it be said that George was a truly special and unique individual who appreciated a good debate about nearly anything, or telling his latest story about negotiating with a clerk over the price of his most recent purchase. George, you have impacted the lives of many and you will be missed.

George is survived by his daughter, Anne (Steve) Deaton; grandsons, Zachary and Joshua; and his sister, Marguerite MacGillis. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, at 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the acquisition funds of the Des Moines Art Center by calling Julia Mason at 515-271-0324.
