David A. Backstrom, 69, died at his home Wednesday, August 10, 2011. He was born September 13, 1941, to George and Mary Alice Backstrom in Des Moines.
David graduated from Lincoln High School and then served in the Navy. He retired from the US Post Office in 2000 as a tug driver after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Auburn Lodge and enjoyed the horse races, gambling, bowling, and golfing.
David is survived by his wife of 32 years, Trudy; children, James (Lisa) Smith, Curt Smith, Anthony (Shelley) Backstrom, George (Kim Greene) Backstrom, Heidi (Thomas West) Backstrom, and Heather (Ricky) Crabbs; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Backstrom; sister, Molly Carico; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Backstrom; and sisters, Shirley George and Sherry Backstrom.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday August 15, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Trudy and all of Dave's family. I was a fellow employee at the Des Moines Main Post Office and worked with Dave for close to 15 years. He was a thoughtful, jovial, and friendly person that I was glad to call a friend. He will be sorely missed by all.
