Service Details

Doris Hortense Gracey, 84, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at her home. A funeral service will be 12 p.m. Saturday, July 30 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Chapel Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Doris was born in Des Moines, IA on February 21, 1927 to Mark Elwood Milburn and Florence Louise Waldron. She lived in Des Moines all her life, attended East High School, and was married to William Ernest Gracey for nearly 66 years. They raised five children together; Cynde Griffiths, Tim Gracey (Marcia), Chris Gracey (Judy), Kevin Gracey (Sandra), and Mary Adams (John). She had 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

She and Bill owned and operated Frank’s Pizza just north of Lincoln High School in the 60’s and 70’s, (when a large pizza was $1.25). She was also the office manager for H.L. McNally & Son for 20 years. She was a member of Woman’s Life Insurance Society and a member of Jordan United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

She instilled in her children a sense of compassion, faith, love of family, and a sense of humor. “Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much.”

In addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she leaves behind her brother Mark Milburn, aunt Lucille Epps, and many nieces, nephews and extended family in Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, infant son Terrence (Tim’s twin), step-father Paul Cramer, step-sisters Mary Fenwick and Shirley Cuthbert, sisters-in-law Florence Milburn and Delphia Freeman, and brother-in-law Floyd Freeman.

Memorials may be made in Doris’s name to the Jordan United Methodist Church, or Mercy Hospice.
