Donald D. Foreman, 89, died Tuesday, July 12, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children of Elmer and Ethel Foreman. He attended Lincoln High before joining the U.S. Navy and serving in the Pacific during WWII. His ship landed troops on Guam, Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Subic Bay and Okinawa. His final mission was to transport 1,756 troops from Guam to San Diego. On board were 357 men liberated from Japanese prisons who had survived the Bataan Death March.

Don married Doris in 1942, and they had six children. He worked for Jewett Lumber, Leachman Lumber, and finally operated his own construction company, framing houses in Greenfield Plaza, Lakewood and other southside locations. He was a lifetime fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Visitation will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home on Friday, July 15, 2011, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with services at noon. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Don is survived by his wife, Letha of Marshalltown; sons Don Jr. (Susan) of Indianola, John (Dee) of Seattle, Ron (Sandra) of Lake City, FL; daughters Diana Kesselring (Gary) Vonnie Jobe (Laddie) and Becky Presswood (David) of Des Moines; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death were his parents, wife Doris; brothers Earnest and Claude; sisters Mildred Savage, Helen Joss and Frances Green. Also preceding him was his grandson, Douglas Foreman.
