Service Details

James Robert Miller passed away October 15, 2020 at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines. He was 75 years old.

James was born on August 16th, 1945 to Charles and Helene (Fellows) Miller in Douds, Iowa. James was a proud member of The United States Air Force and a Veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the Iowa Air National Guard 132nd Tactical Fighter Wing where he worked full time as an aircraft mechanic on A-7’s and F-16’s. After his time with the guard, James continued his civil service with the Bulk Mail Center in Urbandale.

In his spare time, James was an avid hunter of turkey, deer and pheasant. As hunter safety was very important to him, he was a hunter safety instructor for many years. Photography was also a special hobby that he enjoyed. He had an eye for the perfect photo and wouldn’t let you leave until he got “just the right one”! James was a Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 280 and enjoyed volunteering while his son was a troop member. James was also a member of the Masons and The American Legion.

Left to mourn his loss is his son, Michael (Tammy) Miller; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Garrett and Lauren; his sister, Jeanne Grim and his brother, Paul Miller; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful special lifelong friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Donald Grim.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn.

Interment at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions.
